Bipolar Disorder

People with bipolar disorder have mood swings, not the regular ups and downs of life that most of us experience, but more significant changes that impact their occupational, social and family life significantly. These changes in mood may cause them to behave in uncharacteristic ways, to be unpredictable in their decision making & action taking or to go through prolonged periods of dysfunctionality.
Bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic-depressive disorder, is associated with mood swings that can range from the extremes: the lows of depression to the highs of mania. The exact symptoms of bipolar disorder vary from person to person. For some, depression causes most problems, for others, manic symptoms are the main concern. Symptoms of depression and mania (or hypomania) may also occur together. This is known as a mixed episode. Mood shifts may occur only a few times a year, or as often as several times a day.
Although bipolar disorder is a disruptive, long-term condition, without a one-stop cure, it can be managed by following a rigid treatment plan. In most cases, bipolar disorder can be controlled with medications such as mood stabilisers & antidepressants along with psychological counselling and a comprehensive individual-centred strategy.

Diagnosis

While the diagnosis is clinical, at Buddhi Clinic we use a combination of brain imaging, electrophysiology and blood tests to rule out reversible causes or other contributing factors. We also prescribe a thorough pre-rehabilitation assessment including an evaluation for co-morbidities (associated conditions) which will be required in all instances. At Buddhi Clinic our assessment includes standard outcome indicators for activities of daily life, quality of life, neuro-disability and mental health.

Treatment

At Buddhi Clinic, we understand and approach bipolar disorders rather uniquely. We go beyond the mind to explore: brain factors that have an impact on mood, the human body and its contributions (hormonal, metabolic and inflammatory factors) and the role and contribution of the person’s environment.

Our integrative approach beyond medication that stabilises the brain and mind includes neuromodulation (rTMS & tDCS), individual and family psychotherapy and a range of holistic interventions that include ayurveda, naturopathy & yoga which help calm the mind and restore normal functioning.
At Buddhi Clinic we analyze intellect, seizures and behaviour in tandem. Our Buddhi Clinic program addresses a gamut of problems – seizures, mood swings, acting out behaviors, delayed self-help skills, problems with emotional expression & socialization, etc. Apart from medication that enhances attention and memory, and improves overall behavioural issues, we have available a range of memory enhancement procedures including –
